We are a consulting firm of former chief executives that improves the leadership infrastructure of midsized companies seeking to accelerate their performance. We help these leaders rapidly elevate their game and lead their companies to the next level and beyond.

We work with the senior-most executive at companies or divisions with revenue ranging from $20 million to $400 million that are facing significant opportunities and challenges. Our clients are very talented CEOs and c-suite leaders who nonetheless feel they are still learning their craft, realize their company’s performance depends on improving their own performance and want to enhance their skills rapidly and on the job.

Our clients typically work in one of three types of companies:
- Closely Held or Family Firms in which the CEO is often the owner/operator
- Externally Funded Firms: Venture capital, private equity or public whose CEOs are often the entrepreneur who launched the business
- Professional Services Firms: Law, accounting, IT services, etc. whose CEOs rose through the ranks and now manage dozens or hundreds of professionals.

We work with firms whose marketplaces are undergoing change and whose internal organizations have become more complex to manage. They turn to us to raise their skills in three areas: business acumen (competitive analysis, planning, M&A, financial structuring, etc.), leadership acumen (maintaining a high performing team, getting key stakeholders “on the same page”) and interpersonal acumen (listening, emotional intelligence, and relationship management). We help them act with confidence to make critical decisions and lead their organizations.

Unlike consulting firms that are brought in to solve company problems, we are former CEOs of mid-market companies who equip midsized company leaders with the skills to address those problems. And while executive coaches largely help CEOs improve their interpersonal skills, we develop business acumen and leadership acumen in addition to interpersonal acumen. Lastly, where university programs teach leaders in classrooms, we bring the education to our clients so they can learn their new skills on the job to solve pressing issues.

As a result, our clients are far better able to help their companies meet their growth targets, solve both current and future challenges, gain confidence as leaders, raise the game of their leadership teams and make leadership teams more accountable for results.

    The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™ is an assessment-based learning experience that helps people discover what it takes to build a high-performing team. Bringing together everyone’s personalities and preferences to develop a cohesive, productive team takes work, but the payoff can be huge—for your people, the team, and the organization.

    The program helps teams understand how they score on the key components of The Five Behaviors model: Trust, Conflict, Commitment, Accountability, and Results.

    Individual team members will learn about their own personality style and the styles of their team members— based on the Everything DiSC® model—and how their style contributes to the team’s overall success.

  • Creating a Leadership Team That Works Powerfully Together

    We have been brought in by CEOs of numerous midsized companies over the last 10 years to help them create an exceptional leadership team whose members work well together and raise each other’s game.

    Our impact can be rapid: Far better decisions, made much faster; the end to infighting; key initiatives put back on track; much better team performance; and individual performance improvements that can be surprising.

    What’s more, our CEO clients have told us we helped them shed huge concerns and frustrations about their team. The most notable one is that they no longer feel like they’re the only engine pulling the train, that in fact the whole top team is pulling it with them.

  • Improving Strategic and Operational Planning

    We help companies create rigorous and competitively distinctive strategic and operational plans. We get your leadership team aligned on the basics and the details of your strategy: target customers, core products and services, and the basis on which to compete (e.g., price, value-added service, innovation, etc.). After articulating what is too often unarticulated, we help you turn that strategy into concrete operational plans.

    We then make your operating plan come alive. We help your people monitor progress and adjust course to achieve business objectives. To make that happen, we set up what we call the leadership operating system. You can implement this tried-and-true process in four to six weeks, then monitor it to keep the plan on track.

    The process ensures that every executive in your company understands his or her specific operational objectives, the time frame for achieving them, and how to share progress updates. It ensures all parties progress toward key business goals.

  • Facilitating Offsite, Retreat, and Board Meetings

    We facilitate these types of events, using our deep knowledge of the challenges faced by midsized company CEOs and their companies. We bring our personal experience as CEOs and our insights into best practices used in many other midsize companies to expand your thinking and fully explore options.

    We help you plan the content and objectives of your offsites, retreats, and pivotal board meetings. We act as the neutral, outside facilitator of the event. We ensure that everyone gets heard and that the meeting produces tangible, actionable outcomes for the business.

  • Business Coaching: Making Better Decisions Faster

    Like a sports coach, we observe our clients carefully, watching, listening to them. Through careful questioning, we help them zero in on their most challenging problems and help them think through the answers that are often already in their heads.

    In doing so, we help them take advantage of their strengths and work around their weaknesses. It sounds simple, but as highly experienced CEOs and senior executives, we know what questions to ask, and where to dig to uncover highly effective solutions. During our sessions, we’ll also advise you on the choices you have (where appropriate), letting you know what we would do if we were in your shoes.

    We also have consultants who are deep functional experts, and who can work with your CIO, CTO, CMO, Chief Sales Officer, and CHRO. Many of our CEO clients ask our functional experts to give them second opinions in areas where they may not have enough knowledge yet to endorse a functional leader’s plan.

  • Getting Equity Partners Aligned

    We help equity partners in midsized companies become and stay aligned with each other and business goals. At times, we get involved early, helping partners agree on strategy and tactics for the business, operational responsibilities, and peer performance review processes. When we get involved later, we frequently act as mediators, helping to reduce friction.

    For large partnerships, we often help with communication, engagement, and leadership. We typically work with three types of partnerships: professional services firms (e.g., law, engineering, accounting), family businesses, and ownership groups (business partners).

    We start by examining why the business exists, confirming that it matches owners’ current perception. These discussions often surface conflicts about growth – e.g., that not all businesses should try to grow fast. Some partners want to run their companies to suit their lifestyles. In every case, a business must be run in a manner that can keep it competitive.

  • Succession Planning and Ownership Transitions

    We help midsized-company CEOs and their successors through leadership transitions, both intellectually and emotionally. In many cases, a company may need to transfer ownership interests, and we support this delicate transaction as well. We often advise family businesses on the transition from one leadership generation to the next.

    We also help midsized firms do the crucial work of developing a strong leadership bench. We show how training and mentoring can ensure a steady supply of future talent. Some of that talent will be purely additive, to help power company growth. Other people will be needed to replace leaders as they move onto new jobs or deal with health challenges. We also help companies match their up-and-coming leaders with the best-fitting positions.

  • Buying and Selling Businesses

    We help clients reduce risk in M&A and increase the likelihood of success. We get to know you and your business, and prepare for an acquisition or a sale. This could include shoring up the aspects of your business that will otherwise reduce its value, and improving performance so that it meets your sale target.

    If you’re a seller, we direct you on how to get your team — and your checkbook — into shape so that you can afford to buy the right business for you, as well as integrate and invest in the acquisition so it achieves its expected return.
